Longtime friends Lewis Rainsbury, Alex Bailey and Matt Law are the trio behind Vondelpark, who first came to the world’s attention in 2011 via two bad-ass EPs titled NYC Stuff And NYC Bags and Sauna.
Their somewhat elusive Internet presence added to the intrigue of the R&S-signed act at first, allowing the R&B indebted beats and fuzzy, vibe-ridden stoner melodies do the talking for them. Fast-forward two years later and debut album Seabed has shown a maturity in sound; gone are the lo-fo aesthetics and in comes a rich set of production values for a deeply mellow, absorbing experience – all under a disperate set of genres. We met up with the chaps where they played a few games of pool at Canavan’s Pool Hall in Peckham where they discussed debut album Seabed, esoteric genre names (underwater-sideways-pop a favourite they say) and the story of how a laptop containing all their samples got stolen in Amsterdam and how it affected them.
